Two suitcases full of turtles were found yesterday by the Gendarmerie Forces. In total, one hundred and forty-seven radiated tortoises or astrochelys radiata were taken from the hands of traffickers of protected species. The operation was carried out in Soavimasoandro. Informed that individuals were preparing a transaction for the sale of turtles, the territorial company of the National Gendarmerie of Central Imerina developed a plan. Bloodhounds were dispatched to the scene to make arrests. Sensing the operation, the traffickers evaded the gendarmes. However, by thoroughly searching the area, the gendarmerie nevertheless got hold of the two suitcases in which the turtles were locked. The reptiles were left in the care of the Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA) to be treated before being released back into their natural habitat. The astrochelys radiata is an endemic species of Madagascar. The one hundred and forty-seven intercepted turtles come from southern Madagascar, probably poached in natural reserves.
