Smart Africa welcomes the Great Island as a new member of its African digital ecosystem, paving the way for the digital market on the continent. Madagascar takes a significant step in its ambition to integrate into the African digital ecosystem by becoming a member of the Smart Africa Trust Alliance (SATA), a key initiative of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The agreement was formally signed after a steering committee meeting of Smart Africa yesterday in Barcelona, as part of the Mobile World Congress (MWC). This committee, chaired by Director-General Lacina Kone and composed of ministers from member countries of the alliance, worked on the technical preparations for Madagascar’s accession, represented by the Minister of Digital Development, Posts, and Telecommunications, Tahina Razafindramalo. This event was part of the ministerial program of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSMA), the leading global forum bringing together policymakers and leaders of the global mobile ecosystem and related industries, organized on the sidelines of the MWC. SATA, grouping so far eleven African middle-income countries, representing a market of more than 154 million people, offers a platform of opportunities for trade and digital development. Fostering trust, interoperability, and innovation, this alliance opens up new business prospects in various areas such as e-commerce, digital payments, healthcare, and online education. At the heart of this alliance is a coordination and operations mechanism aimed at facilitating cross-border use of digital identities and data. In line with the ongoing development of the digital trade protocol of the AfCFTA, SATA paves the way towards the creation of a single digital market on a continental scale. This membership reflects Madagascar’s commitment to contributing to the transformation of Africa into a unified and dynamic digital market. Minister Tahina Razafindramalo will provide details on this integration in an upcoming interview. L’Express de Madagascar.
