From April 13th to 20th, the Miangaly Theatre Company will represent Madagascar in the Story category at the prestigious MASA Festival in Côte d’Ivoire.
The African artistic scene is eagerly anticipating the performance of the Miangaly Theatre Company (CMT) at the thirteenth edition of the Market for African Performing Arts (MASA) Festival in 2024. It is an opportunity to discover a captivating initiatory tale titled “The Child and the Night Drum,” written by Jean Luc Raharimanana. From April 13th to 20th, the audience will have the privilege of being transported into a world filled with magic and imagination at the MASA headquarters in Côte d’Ivoire.
The CMT excels in the Story category, where Fela Razafiarison and Tina Rakotondrasoa will bring this internationally acclaimed production to life. “We chose ‘The Child and the Night Drum’ because it is a show that celebrates difference and childlike imagination. It is the story of a boy who, every evening at sunset, is drawn to a mysterious sound. A sound that stops when he opens his eyes,” explains Fela Razafiarison of CMT. An enchanting fable that takes the audience on a journey where reality and imagination merge. The organization of the trip, including visas, flights, and accommodation, is taken care of by the MASA organizers, who have been ready since January.
Cultural Development
“This is not a competition but a presentation of contemporary Malagasy theater. MASA is an essential reference for live art in Africa, providing a platform to promote Malagasy theater internationally. Four members of the company will be present to participate in this festival, including two artists and two technicians,” she explains. This year, the festival is themed “Youth, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship: Drivers for the Development of African Performing Arts Industries.” In addition to CMT, four other artists will represent Madagascar in different categories.
The Zolobe company will dazzle the audience with circus and puppetry disciplines, while the Up the Rap company will showcase Malagasy excellence in dance. Abdoulanlim Abdillah, also known as Hichim, will thrill the audience with his powerful slams, and Masabao will light up the stage in the Music category. MASA embodies a comprehensive program for the cultural development of African performing arts, promoting the creation and production of high-quality shows, facilitating the mobility of creators in Africa and worldwide, training artists and production chain actors, and revitalizing the performing arts sector in Africa, including music, theater, dance, and more.
