Madagascar is represented by five distinct artistic disciplines, coming together to showcase Malagasy talents at the 2024 Marché des Arts du Spectacle Africain (MASA) Festival in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. From the mesmerizing dance movements of the Up the Rap company, to the marvel of circus and puppetry with the Zolobe company, to the captivating storytelling of the Miangaly company, the poetic slam of Abdoulanlim Abdillah, alias Hichim, and the enchanting melodies of Masabao, Madagascar’s cultural diversity is showcased under the African spotlight.
The thirteenth edition of the MASA Festival, dedicated to African and diaspora artists, is in full swing until April 20, offering a vibrant platform for professional meetings, artistic presentations, exhibitions, and much more. Since the start of the festival last Saturday, Malagasy troupes have stood out with exceptional performances.
The Miangaly company dazzled the audience with “L’Enfant et le Tambour de Nuit,” while Up the Rap company electrified the stage last night and continues on Thursday. Hichim shared his poetic slam “Chaise Vide 19” and Masabao mesmerized spectators with his musical show “Voyage Musical à Madagascar,” featuring the “Taroba Beko.”
The Zolobe company presented the show “Sakasaka,” a piece combining laughter and water, offering a comedic journey into this theme, with the participation of five talented artists. “We have received full coverage of our local and international transportation, as well as meals. Additionally, we received cards that give us access to all the festival shows and allow us to meet other cultural actors, programmers, and various professionals,” says Hichim. The Miangaly Company adds: “These first days at MASA have been a source of enrichment, with the presence of talented artists from the continent and beyond, and inspiring discussions on the development of cultural and creative industries.”
Talent Showcase
For Malagasy artists, MASA represents not just a competition, but a showcase of Malagasy art. The festival is an essential reference for live art in Africa, providing an ideal platform to promote Malagasy artists internationally. “We intend to market our shows to festival programmers and institutions. In fact, we are eager to participate in professional meetings on April 18 to present our projects, performances, and work,” explains Hichim.
With sixty-seven invited artists and one hundred thirty-three performances on the program, including five representatives from Madagascar in five different disciplines, the 2024 MASA Festival is themed “Youth, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship: Levers for the development of the African performing arts industry.” Organizers cover all travel expenses, including visas, airfare, and accommodation, to ensure the participation of all.
