Yesterday, the new ODOF factory in Mahitsy, specializing in the production of ketchup and tomato concentrate, was inaugurated opening new prospects for local producers.
The tomato processing plant in Mahitsy was inaugurated yesterday, marking a major milestone for the local economy and producers in the region. This event represents a significant effort by the government as part of the “One District, One Factory” (ODOF) program aimed at boosting industrial development near production areas.
Farmers and cooperatives in Mahitsy are particularly pleased with this advancement, which guarantees them a stable and rewarding market for their tomatoes. “This factory is a blessing for us. Previously, selling our tomatoes was a constant source of worry due to their perishable nature. Now we have a reliable buyer who values our work at a fair price,” said the president of a local producers’ cooperative. This initiative aligns perfectly with the minister’s efforts to encourage local processing of raw materials, thus strengthening the economy and financial stability of producers.
Impact
The factory’s capacity to process one hundred kilograms of tomatoes per hour represents the potential for local industrial transformation. The choice of Mahitsy for this factory was strategic, as it is one of the bastions of tomato production in Analamanga, with an average annual production of twenty-six thousand tonnes.
The project’s impact goes beyond the commune’s borders. Thanks to the law on cooperative societies, producer associations benefit from a legal framework that allows them to operate as independent economic entities, capable of marketing their products both locally and outside the region.
“All stakeholders involved, from farmers to producers, benefit from this project, ensuring that our processed tomatoes become symbols of our productivity,” said Johnny, the elected deputy of the constituency, confirming popular support for the project.
The management of the factory by the company “Dago Green Consulting” ensures continuity in the supply of raw materials, handling products not only from Mahitsy but also from neighboring regions. This addresses one of the minister’s major concerns, as he had promised to end the wastage of local production during his visits to Mahitsy.
The program serves as a model of local economic development, supporting entrepreneurs in transforming local products and aiming for the country’s food self-sufficiency. The success of this project in Mahitsy is already inspiring other regions, highlighting the government’s commitment to sustainable development and local industrialization.
