After the devastating passage of Cyclone Gamane, the Ceni will wait before reacting. However, it remains attentive to the situation of candidates in these isolated districts.

To address the significant damage caused by Cyclone Gamane, the Executive has decided to declare a national disaster. This decision comes after several districts in the northern part of the island were cut off. This can make it difficult or even impossible for some candidates to reach the verification and registration organs (Ovec) to formalize their candidacies.

In this regard, the reaction of the National Independent Electoral Commission (Ceni) is expected. However, Soava Andriamarotafika, the Ceni’s general rapporteur, explained yesterday that the election preparation body will only act after the closure of the submission of candidacy files by the Ovec on April 8. According to him, at that time, the Ceni will make appropriate decisions based on the situation. Currently, the Ceni is paying attention to those candidates who are having difficulty reaching the Ovec. Ceni members are currently on a mission throughout the island to monitor the electoral process.

As of now, despite the challenges some candidates face in formalizing their candidacies, the Ceni’s general rapporteur explains that the extension of the deadline for receiving files by the Ovec has not yet been discussed. However, he clarified that nothing has been decided and that only the situation will determine the measures and decisions to be taken by the Ceni.

With less than two months until the election date, voters are forced to leave their electoral districts to take refuge in government shelters after the passage of Gamane. Nevertheless, on Thursday, Interior Minister Justin Tokely stated that the electoral process is proceeding as usual and that there is nothing to fear regarding the conduct of the elections, whether in terms of technical and logistical aspects or finances.
