Less than two months, voters will go to the polls to elect members of parliament.

Today is the last day for parliamentary candidates to submit or complete their candidacy files. Several candidates are still expected to submit their documents today.

Today is the final day for the Verification and Registration Bodies of Candidates (Ovec) to receive the candidacy files of those vying for seats in the National Assembly. Unlike the opening of the reception of files, the final days of receiving candidacies were crowded with a variety of candidates rushing to formalize their candidacies. Since the end of last week, Ovec members have been busy with candidates submitting their files and others prospecting for possible candidacies. For today, candidate submissions are expected, whether they are completing the required documents or submitting the entire files.

The disastrous passage of Cyclone Gamane leaves its mark on the electoral process. Displaced voters and the isolation of certain electoral constituencies can influence the electoral process. The difficulty of reaching isolated Ovec offices for candidates can also penalize them with the deadline for today. Asked about the issue, the National Independent Electoral Commission (Ceni), through its general rapporteur Soava Andriamarotafika, states that the body will take measures to address the consequences of Gamane on the electoral process. However, the general rapporteur explains that Ceni will only act after the closure of the candidacy filing to have more complete information on the actual situation.

Candidates will have until five o’clock to formalize their candidacies. Tomorrow, the Ovec will make decisions on the list of accepted candidates.

The list of documents to be provided for the candidacy to be accepted is fifteen, including the receipt of payment of the twenty million ariary deposit or a copy of the property declaration form. After the arrival of the validated lists by the registration bodies, Ceni is supposed to release the list of one hundred and sixty-three candidates for the one hundred and twenty districts. The electoral campaign begins on May 8th and ends on May 28th at midnight. The next day will be election day.

For this last day, the atmosphere at the Ovec offices promises to be lively with several candidates expected to formalize their participation. Candidates from the Coalition for the Presidential Majority are the most awaited, as it is the platform that is the last to mandate its standard bearers. With Ceni planning to take action on disaster-affected electoral constituencies after today, changes may occur in the following days. From tomorrow, the ball will be in Ceni’s court.
