The Minister of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene visited the Jirama station in Mandroseza.

Water supply in Antananarivo will soon return to normal. Breakdowns at the Mandroseza station have caused disruptions.

Replacement of faulty parts. Malfunctioning bearings in the two pumps at the Mandroseza station led to massive water cuts in some neighborhoods of Antananarivo. These parts were replaced by Jirama technicians yesterday. The neighborhoods that were deprived of water will be able to benefit again. “Households that will benefit from the return of water are those in low-lying neighborhoods like Tsiadana and Antsahameva, and this will continue in other areas like Analamahitsy and Alasora. The return of water supply is gradual,” according to Hilarion Ramiaramanana, Director of Emergency Water Works at Jirama.

Yesterday, the Minister of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene made a visit to the Jirama station in Mandroseza. The purpose was to assess the technical problems that are hindering water supply to certain neighborhoods. Fidiniavo Ravokatra, Minister of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, emphasized that “the bearings in the two pumps were faulty. The parts date back to 1970 and the engines to 1980. The parts were difficult to find. But Jirama tried to find solutions. Thus, the two pumps are working again.” The minister specified that “the faulty parts have been replaced.”

Meeting

The ministry, in collaboration with Jirama, announces that it will do everything to reduce water supply problems. The minister also encouraged people to remain calm. According to him, protests are not the solution.

A meeting of the minister with the chiefs of fokontany who have water supply problems took place yesterday at the Analakely City Hall. This meeting was organized to identify persistent problems, such as the increasing population, aging infrastructure, lack of pressure, various technical issues, and water cuts during the day. For the case of the Antsampandrano Ilafy fokontany, Arson Théodore Rasolotiana announced that water supply in their neighborhood has stopped for water fountains, water bottles, and wells. The chief of the Ambaniala Itaosy fokontany, Haingo Rakotonirina, said that some families in their neighborhood have to stay up at night to get water. This happens between 11 pm and 4 am. There is no water during the day.

Long-term as well as short-term solutions were found during this meeting, such as increasing the time devoted to filling water bottles in fokontany, increasing the number of water bottles for fokontany in need, and supplying electricity to unused drilling stations.

In three months, the ministry plans to build five new water dispensers in neighborhoods considered to be red zones in terms of water cuts. A project entitled PAAEP, funded by the World Bank, will be the long-term solution.

At the latest, water supply should return to normal today in the afternoon. As for the neighborhoods mentioned above. Not to mention that in the peripheral areas of Antananarivo, water supply problems still persist.
