An exceptional event for Francophone literature in Mahajanga. Roukiata Ouedraogo began her journey in Madagascar, thanks to the support of the French embassy.
Yesterday and for two days, the winner of the first Francophone literature prize, Roukiata Ouedraogo, is in Mahajanga. The author, a Franco-Burkinabé artist, screenwriter, comedian, and columnist on France Inter, won the first prize in this Francophone literature competition in Mahajanga with her novel “Du miel sous les galettes.” Upon arriving in the city of Flowers, she gave a conference entitled “Ma traversée des langues françaises” at the headquarters of the Alliance Française.
The presentation and sale of her works this morning will be followed by a book signing session. The award ceremony will conclude the cultural event this afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Four young participants from Sainte Jeanne d’Arc, Saint Gabriel, Philibert Tsiranana High School, and Antanimalandy High School will be invited to attend the ceremony.
Discovery
“The first edition of the Literature Prize is initiated by the Alliance Française of Mahajanga. It is both an action of discovery and sharing. The objectives include revitalizing reading among young people, which has been diminished by the effects and weight of new media. It also aims to promote a literature of proximity that refers to the social context in which the participants operate, and to discover contemporary literature in its diversity,” explains Chrystelle Lafaysse, director of the Alliance Française of Mahajanga.
She adds: “The prize encourages the development of a lively relationship with reading by fostering encounters between Francophone authors and students. Furthermore, it aims to build the critical thinking of students by teaching them to argue and formulate their opinions on a piece of literature, both orally and in writing. One of the main objectives of this prize is also to create links between schools and between generations.”
Forty high school students had the opportunity to read three novels by three authors from three different countries. They also wrote a literary critique and shared their opinions at a gathering where they voted for their favorite novel, written by Roukiata Ouedraogo.
She will be at the Alliance Française in Antsirabe from April 3rd to 6th and in Antananarivo on April 16th.
