The African Football Confederation visited three countries, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, which could host the qualifying phase of the 2024 CHAN edition.
After months without information, the organization of the eighth African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 has resurfaced. Initially entrusted to Kenya, the second major competition in Africa could be jointly organized by three nations. A preliminary visit by representatives of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) took place on March 6 and 7 to inspect the stadiums that could host the competition.
CAF plans to organize the CHAN in three countries, namely Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. The CHAN 2024 qualifiers were initially scheduled to take place in September, but they have been postponed to a later date. Six geographical zones (Unaf, Ufoa, Uniffac, Cecafa, Cosafa, Uffoi) are involved in these qualifiers. The decision has not yet been made, but the new trend seems to lean towards co-organization. If confirmed, this would serve as a first test before the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be jointly held in three East African countries.
Currently, the dates are unclear, but the tournament is expected to take place in September. A decision is expected next week.
Confirmed
In October, Kenya was still the only country designated to host the next CHAN, a decision made in September 2023. Forty-six nations will participate in the qualifying rounds from the six continental zones. The CHAN brings together every two years the sixteen African national teams composed of players who play only in clubs from their respective countries.
Everything remains to be formalized, but the formula for the qualifiers remains unchanged with matches by geographical zone. The continent is divided into six zones. Ranked third in the previous edition held in Algeria in 2023, Madagascar plays in the Cosafa zone, which includes eleven countries: Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. The preliminary round will be played in three stages. Eighteen countries will qualify for the final phase.
