The selected athletes have been undergoing intensive training with expert Frédéric Rubio for two weeks.
Negotiations are ongoing between the Malagasy Wrestling Federation and the Ministry of Youth and Sports. A meeting between the two parties took place over a week ago. The federation is waiting for confirmation from the ministry regarding the number of delegation members for the Olympic qualifying circuits.
Four out of the eight wrestlers originally planned will compete in the African Games in Accra from March 8 to 11. The African Championships will take place from March 14 to 19 in Egypt, and the Olympic qualification tournament from March 22 to 24 in Alexandria.
The federation plans to field six athletes in these events. Two more, in addition to those participating in the African Games, are expected to join the team in Egypt. The president of the federation, Mamitiana Raveloson, stated that all necessary preparations and payments have been made for the competitions.
Qualification Process:
“The top two finalists in each category will secure Olympic qualification. If the athletes do not qualify through the continental championships, they can still aim for wild card entries by participating in these circuits,” explained the discipline’s leader.
The selected athletes have been in intensive training since mid-January under the guidance of international expert Frédéric Rubio at ANS Ampefiloha. The federation, along with the expert, has identified the athletes with potential for the qualifying circuits. Six female athletes have been deemed eligible, including Victorine Rasoamalala (50kg), Emma Rasoanantenaina (53kg), Malala Soloniaina (57kg), and Elodie Rasoarimalala. For the male category, the potential qualifiers are Mbolalalaina Rakotoniaina (74kg), Falihery Randrianantoandro (65kg), and Julien Rakotomanana (57kg).
All these wrestlers have previously won gold medals at the Island Games and have mostly clinched medals at the African Championships and the Francophone Games.
