The reinforcement of security and accident prevention during Easter is the goal of the action taken by authorities in Mahajanga since Wednesday. According to the municipal decree, car traffic will be interrupted during the Easter weekend to reduce the risk of accidents in the region during the festivities. The PoincarĂ© boulevard, from the grand baobab to the lighthouse of the port captaincy of Mahajanga, will be closed from Sunday at 15:00 until Monday at midnight. It will be turned into a pedestrian street, with parking lots set up nearby. On the other hand, as part of Operation Sarika, an awareness campaign started around Mahabibo, a known red zone, on Wednesday. Three hundred elements of the national police will be deployed throughout the city during the Easter weekend to enhance security. “The purpose of this operation is to raise awareness for ensuring safety,” said the director of public security in Mahajanga, Christian Tombohasy. “Users of the RN4 must respect road rules and follow instructions. Arrangements are in place. Departure checks are organized at both regional and national bus stations. Routine vehicle and driver’s license checks will be carried out. The car caravan is mandatory for any travel outside Mahajanga. Elements of the national gendarmerie are deployed along National Road 4,” highlighted the regional director of transport Boeny/Melaky, Jary Antonio. Representatives of the national police, national gendarmerie, transport directors of the urban commune of Mahajanga, the representative of the Land Transport Agency (ATT) of Mahajanga, and those of road safety in Mahajanga have participated in this campaign since Wednesday.
