The International Consumer Protection Day was an opportunity to open the dialogue on the role of artificial intelligence in consumers’ lives.

Technological tools are increasingly taking up space in current societies. An opportunity to assert the rights of consumers, who are often victims of unfair commercial practices.

A relentless fight. “When consumer rights are not respected, one cannot expect development,” said Tiana Rabarison, president of the Consumers’ Rights Defenders Association (Fimzompam), yesterday. It was on the occasion of the celebration of International Consumer Protection Day held in Mahamasina. The lack of knowledge of consumer rights provides ample room for opportunists who exploit this ignorance to their advantage. The Ministry of Industrialization and Commerce places paramount importance on the fight against unfair commercial practices.

Edgard Razafindravahy, the head of this department, states that priority is given to consumers. “At the ministry, taking care of consumers is a daily task so that they can fully enjoy their rights. Every day, prices of products as well as their quality are monitored, and measures are taken against profiteers,” he emphasizes. Users will no longer be caught off guard by being victims of poor quality products and services.

Concerns

Officials of the Consumer Rights Defense Association are also fighting this battle with the supervisory ministry. “We have already worked with the Department of Industrialization and Commerce to prevent all kinds of unfair commercial practices. This includes market raids, fighting against expired products, and much more,” they say.

With the advancement of digital technology, the stakes are also higher. Asserting consumer rights is a concern for both consumer rights advocates and the Ministry of Commerce. Technological tools are an excellent way to inform the public about their rights regarding consumption. That is why this year, the main theme addressed was “An adapted and responsible artificial intelligence for customers.” Customers are at the center of all transactions and social interactions on a daily basis. Users of goods and services are at the forefront in the digital age, with the development of online commerce and the use of artificial intelligence. The legislation governing this practice was discussed during this workshop celebrating International Consumer Protection Day.

The celebration of International Consumer Rights Day was held yesterday at the Tometal Mahamasina hotel. With the direction of consumer protection and all stakeholders involved in the digital field in Madagascar, this celebration was placed under the theme of “Artificial Intelligence.” This tool could be useful in the field of commerce, but it requires a certain ethics and a well-defined code of conduct in its use.
