Bamboo kiosk to attract people. The artisans of the rural commune of Sadjoavato – Antsiranana-II, grouped within the FITSAMIVA association or “Fikambanan’ny Tantsaha eto Sadjoavato Miasa Valiha”, have benefited from a training and production center. For years, they have been used to making large baskets, locally called “Atomby”, in a basic and traditional artisanal way, almost without any transformation.
The construction of this center was born from an observation by the Kobaby project, which saw their natural talent and dynamism at work. It all started with a series of training and skills enhancement in assembly for men and weaving for women. This was accompanied by the construction of houses and bamboo kiosks.
The valorization of natural resources and value chains for the existing sectors are considered a priority by the Kobaby project in its support for development and conservation. That’s why the project has provided support to improve their income.
According to the explanations, this infrastructure provision aims to encourage the scaling up of existing initiatives for the promotion of bamboo sectors as an income-generating activity alternative to unsustainable practices that have a negative impact on biodiversity, to be developed in Sadjoavato, as a peripheral area of the priority protected areas of Kobaby.
“This project aims to support artisans to have creative and innovative spirit and to seek partners based on the project’s support, such as strengthening their capacity, building sheds to display their products, setting up a workshop for the production of bamboo articles, and providing a storage store. All accompanied by starter kits for bamboo artisans,” explained the coordinator of the Kobaby project, Hanta Rabetaliana.
Last Saturday, the keys were handed over to the management association of the center during a ceremony held in Sadjoavato. This was done in the presence of two relevant regional directors, the president of the municipal council of the commune, as well as technicians from the donor project.
Unfortunately, some of them are not determined to move forward. They managed to sell the samples produced during the training and returned to their original activity.
