| Local authorities and state officials have joined hands to rescue residents. |
Residents of Vohémar, the area hit by cyclone Gamane, endured twelve hours of nightmare. Six deaths and two thousand six hundred victims are to be deplored.
Residents of the Sava region experienced more than twelve hours of intense anxiety yesterday. Describing the violence of the storm, Lalasoa Randriamiaramanana, district chief of Vohémar, describes nightmarish conditions: “The winds intensified from two in the morning, accompanied by incessant rains. Sleeping was impossible in such circumstances. The streets were deserted, giving way to terror.” Local authorities, assisted by law enforcement and the Civil Protection Corps, had to organize evacuation operations to rescue residents trapped in flooded homes.
Considerable damage
While the winds relatively spared the region, the floods caused considerable damage, including six reported deaths in different locations. The number of displaced persons amounts to two thousand six hundred, of which two thousand one hundred are in Vohémar. Roads are cut off, bridges collapsed, plunging the region into isolation.
Cyclone Gamane affected three regions: Diana, Sava, and Analanjirofo. As the system moves slowly southward, meteorological forecasts predict heavy persistent rains in several regions.
During yesterday’s Council of Ministers meeting, President Andry Rajoelina ordered a rapid mobilization to assist the victims of cyclone Gamane. Measures have been taken to airlift humanitarian aid in the next 24 hours, subject to favorable weather conditions. In collaboration with the Armed Forces, the Ministry of the Interior, and the BNGRC, rescue operations are underway to evacuate still trapped populations and provide shelter. Restoring communication routes, especially National Route 5A, is a priority to restore normalcy in the disaster-stricken region.
