The 3×3 Ankoay are preparing for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament (TQO) in May, which will take place in Debrecen, Hungary.

45 days before the opening of the Olympic Qualification Tournament (TQO), which will take place from May 16 to 19 in Debrecen, Hungary, apart from the four members of the Ankoay national team – Arnol Solondrainy, Livio Ratianarivo, Elly Randriamampionona, Rick-Ley Loubacky – two other players, Fiary Johnson Rakotonirina and Anthony Nelson Rasolomanana, have resumed training at Mahamasina Sports Palace for two weeks.

Under the guidance of national coach Jean de Dieu Randrianarivelo, or Coach Deda for insiders, the preselected members of the Ankoay national team have been practicing what they learned from Serbian expert Danilo Lukic, founder of the high-level 3X3 Academy of Serbia in Monastir, Tunisia.

Currently, two days a week, Fridays and Saturdays, have been chosen as training days due to the unavailability of some players. Training is mainly focused on technical and tactical reinforcement, especially on the physical condition of each player, in order to enable the Malagasy team to fill the gaps identified during the 2022 World Cup and the recent African Cup in Egypt.

Intensive training

There are still forty-five days left, but to fine-tune strategies on all four corners of the court, this amount of time seems insufficient in the face of the magnitude of the event, the Olympic qualification.

“What awaits the Ankoay will not be easy as they will face the top fifteen national teams from several countries, including Lithuania, Germany, Switzerland, among others. Our work focuses on physical conditions, shooting accuracy, and coordination on the court to find the automatism and complementarity among players,” said the coach.

Training will resume after the Easter break and will intensify as the event approaches. The goal for the Ankoay national team is to be ready and better prepared compared to the 2022 World Cup.

Compared to the experiences of the 3×3 Ankoay national team during the African Championship, with the bronze medal in December 2023, Falihery Nasolomanjaka, a supporter of the 3×3 Ankoay national team, gave his opinion: “Physically, the Malagasy players suffered during the African Championship. For the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, all opponents are well above the African level. Without proper preparation, Madagascar will have no chance against professional players. As long as there is still time, members of the Ankoay national team must improve their shooting accuracy from all angles of the court, as their success depends on it.”
