Romuald Rakotondrabe, Barea’s coach.
The selection staff led by coach Romuald Rakotondrabe goes through a long process before calling up a player to join the team. He should consult the player as well as his agent.
The Barea and the staff under the spotlight. Madagascar will host an international friendly tournament during the FIFA window from March 18th to 26th at home. Three countries have responded to the invitation from the Malagasy Football Federation (FMF), namely Rwanda, Burundi, and Botswana.
Coach Romuald Félix Rakotondrabe, also known as Rôrô, officially unveiled the list of preselected players Sunday at the FMF headquarters in Isoraka. Some footballers fear and have stated on social media the unavailability of some expatriates. When asked about the truth of the information, coach Rôrô explained the procedures for calling up a player playing abroad.
“I have consulted each of the expatriates. Either I go and meet the player in person as during my stay in France, or I call them and send one of my assistants, Gilles Hugon or Bolida (Lalaina Nomenjanahary). But my colleagues will never go to meet the players without my consent… So far, none of these expatriates have informed me of their unavailability,” says coach Rôrô.
Several parameters. The coach explains: “I start the procedure with the consultation and interview with the player, sometimes several times. Then, I contact his agent or manager to discuss everything, especially the conditions. Sometimes, I assign the mission to Bolida or Gilles. We had to meet or call the player’s father to say that there are a lot of exchanges before officially calling up the players.” As the technician has always reiterated, the availability of a player depends on several parameters and unexpected events such as injury. Moreover, these players will still have to play two or three matches with their respective clubs. That is why his staff has published an extended pre-list more than two weeks before the friendly matches.
“In addition, we follow, day by day, each of these players, match by match, to observe their form on the eve of the official matches. We will select them based on their performance and form at the moment,” emphasizes Rôrô. “Sometimes, some players decide on their own not to join the team feeling not fully prepared,” he adds. In short, the unavailability of one or more players requested for selection is common. “We will see over time,” concludes the coach.
