Eric Herman Andriantsitohaina won three gold medals for Madagascar in Accra.

Madagascar finally opened its gold account at the 13th edition of the African Games, currently underway in Accra, Ghana. Since Sunday in the weightlifting discipline, Eric Herman Andriantsitohaina has won three gold medals for the Big Island.

Competing in the -55 kg category, Eric Herman Andriantsitohaina won the first three gold medals and placed Madagascar in sixth place in the provisional standings: ten medals including three gold, one silver, and six bronze. Spectators at the GCB hall at the University of Ghana were amazed by the technical skill and devastating strength of Eric Herman Andriantsitohaina, who once again showed that he is the undisputed master of his category in Africa.

Despite his small stature, Eric Herman Andriantsitohaina lifted 96 kg in the snatch, followed by Mauritian Emile Wilhem Gwendal who lifted 91 kg for the silver medal. Ugandan Davis Nyioyita won the bronze by lifting 90 kg.

Assured Succession

In the clean and jerk, Eric Herman Andriantsitohaina won his second gold medal by dominating the competition with a lift of 135 kg, over 15 kg more than his closest competitor, the Ugandan who lifted 120 kg for the silver medal. Nigerian Roi Kalu claimed the bronze with a weight of 115 kg in the clean and jerk.

With a total Olympic weight of 231 kg, Eric Herman Andriantsitohaina won his third gold medal ahead of Ugandan Davis Nyioyita who lifted 120 kg, earning him a silver medal. Nigerian Roi Kalu took the bronze with a total Olympic weight of 203 kg.

In the women’s category, two weightlifters won a silver medal and three bronze medals. In the -49 kg category, Sabrina Andriamitantsoa won a silver medal for the Olympic total of 140 kg lifted, and two bronze medals. She won silver in the Olympic total with 140 kg lifted and two bronzes in snatch (60 kg) and clean and jerk (80 kg). Fabia Andriamitantsoa won a bronze medal in the clean and jerk after lifting 67 kg.

After his victory, Eric Herman Andriantsitohaina expressed his satisfaction and already has another goal in mind.

“I am happy with my results because the main goal is to win the three gold medals, and that mission has been accomplished. In the snatch, I got a little distracted. I am now 33 years old, and my next challenge is to win a medal in the World Cup, which is very difficult, but we will see.”

Rosa Rakotozafy, Director General of Sports, said, “The result is encouraging. The presence of young athletes heralds a bright future, ensuring the succession of Malagasy sport, and the government is there to support them.”
