11 days before the opening ceremony of the XIIIth edition of the African Games that will take place from March 8 to 23 in Accra, Ghana, the Malagasy Athletics Federation, led by Dominique Raherison, interviewed during the Analamanga cross-country championship last Sunday at the Ivato track, announced that four female athletes will represent Madagascar in Accra. They are Claudine Nomenjanahary, Sidonie Fiadanantsoa, Haingo Brigitte Razanajafy, and Florentine Razanamandroso.
The Federation’s choice is to send more athletes without distinction of gender but it is the Malagasy state that has approved the number of athletes involved.
The four athletes will each play in their favorite individual event. Claudine Nomenjanahary will compete in the 100 and 200 meters flat, Sidonie Fiadanantsoa in the 100m hurdles, Haingo Brigitte Razanajafy in the 100m flat, and Florentine in the long jump. After the individual events, they will join forces to compete together in the 4 x 100 meters event.
As emphasized by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Haja André Resampa, during his meeting with the presidents and representatives of the eleven sports federations that will represent Madagascar in Accra, “Sport is a tool that serves to convey the good image of Madagascar abroad. Thus, Malagasy participation will not be symbolic. We are going there to seek medals, and we will only send the best athletes with good track records.”
Reduced number
These four athletes shone during the eleventh edition of the IOIG played in Madagascar by winning all gold medals, a triple for Claudine Nomenjanahary, a triple for Sidonie Fiadanantsoa, one for Haingo Brigitte Razanajafy, and one with a new Madagascar record for Florentine Razanamandroso.
Compared to the IOIG editions, Madagascar will be represented by a reduced number of athletes. The level at the African Games is very high because many disciplines that will be played there are qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. From this perspective, athletes must be accompanied by technicians to be precise in their participation. To be successful in sports in general, the delegation must include technicians, nutritionists, doctors, physiotherapists… to closely monitor everything related to the athletes. This is not yet the case in Madagascar.
An official from a federation, who wishes to remain anonymous, explained: “The presence of an official at the technical meeting, in the program schedule, in the request for equipment, in case of complaint, etc., is mandatory, but for us, this is not the case. The athletes are left to their own devices, unfortunately,” said our interlocutor.
