BabaĂ¯que’s performance during the opening of the cultural season at the Alliance française theater.
The Alliance française of Antsiranana launched the opening of its 2024 cultural season on Friday evening. To mark this event, cultural and artistic festivities were organized at the theater. After a welcome in the Alliance’s lobby, accompanied by the percussion sounds of the DS Velively group, the approximately three hundred spectators were invited to take their seats in the theater. As an opener, a beautiful urban dance performance by three young artists from the Diego crew “The Fusion” was followed by an intervention from the slam poets of the Slam SuarĂ© collective.
It was only natural to call on Jean David Baba, also known as BabaĂ¯que, a renowned singer-songwriter from Ambanja, to mark this evening. To the delight of everyone, BabaĂ¯que took the stage with his three musicians and, at times, with Graciane, a talented young dancer. As soon as he started singing, the audience, knowing the lyrics by heart, sang along with him to his greatest hits like “Anao tiako, Havana, Sarine, Aminay agny”… Songs that marked his musical career. The audience was ecstatic to see him on stage, some lighting up their phones, others clapping along to the familiar salegy rhythm of the North. More than just a concert, BabaĂ¯que, who hadn’t performed on stage in some time, offered the numerous audience members, who came specifically for him, an unforgettable show. This artist, with his unique voice and songs that all Antsiranans know from the first notes, was particularly generous. He responded without hesitation to the encores from his fans.

After the various performances, the director of the Alliance française of Antsiranana, Sophie Groeber, presented the numerous and diverse events planned in the cultural program of the Alliance française, offered free to the people of Antsiranana thanks to the support of partners such as the French Embassy, CMDMD, PFOI, Orange Madagascar, La Terrasse du Voyageur… She also introduced Nadjima Adame, the new deputy director in charge of Culture and Communication at the Antsiranana organization.
This year, special attention is being given to women during the month of March. Therefore, the upcoming events are announced to the public. Namely, the opening of the exhibition “Sacred Women, Divine Women” by the painter Yasmine Fidimalala on Thursday, March 7, a conference on the theme “Representing women’s sensitivity through Francophone Malagasy comics” by Dr. Miadana Andoanjarasoa on March 9, followed by another theme “Virtualization of the feminine Levinasian in Malagasy thought” by Dr. Josie Stella Ratsaraharisoa on March 15. And it will all end with a third conference “#Zakoa or writing about rape between emancipation and denunciation” by the writer Hary Rabary on March 22. In short, this new season promises to be lively, festive, and touching.
