In the evening of Thursday, a cooking fire caused a fire in one of the shops on the Analakely esplanade. The firefighters managed to extinguish it in forty-five minutes.
The fire occurred in the heart of the city, in Analakely, and almost razed the pavilions located on the esplanade on Thursday evening. It consumed a shop, the one opposite the Protestant cathedral.
It was around 8:45 pm. The roads were less crowded and traffic was smooth between Andohan’Analakely and Independence Avenue. Night owls noticed a column of black smoke coming out of the building. Flames started to be visible at the roof level. The orange light of the fire and the crackling sounds were frightening.
The firefighters from the Antananarivo Urban Commune intervened as soon as they received the first alert. They arrived in a flash. Law enforcement officers were by their side to secure the area. The rescue operation was carried out without any complications. The firefighters deployed major resources to extinguish the fire in just forty-five minutes.
The fire was limited to material damage. The structure, partly built in metal, can still be repaired. The police are waiting for the tenant’s inventory results to identify the goods consumed inside and assess the loss.
The hardware store, thrift stores, restaurant, and small wooden commercial installations clustered on the esplanade were spared. “The consequences would have been catastrophic if there had been wind. Luckily, the fire spread a bit slowly and the firefighters are based in a nearby neighborhood,” explains a police officer. He participated in a joint patrol in the area at the time of the incident as part of the security arrangement for the commemoration of March 29, 1947.
According to the initial investigation conducted on-site, the cause of the fire is linked to the carelessness of a security agent at the site. He cooked with charcoal, and embers flew and triggered the fire.
The firefighters returned to their station after clearing and putting out the remaining fires. The evening did not offer them any rest.
