Residents of Busamo village in Kamuli District took matters into their own hands when they lynched a machete-wielding man for his alleged indiscriminate hacking of two women, resulting in the death of one. The shocking incident occurred when Mr. Jude Kalebi, a resident of Busamo village in Butansi sub-county in Kamuli District, first targeted three goats, leaving them dead before turning his weapon on two women who were returning from the garden. The victims were identified as Ms. Merabu Mugaba, who tragically died on the spot, and Ms. Janet Naiguru, who sustained serious injuries, as reported by Mr. Richard Waiswa, another resident of the area.
According to eyewitnesses, Kalebi’s violent spree didn’t stop there. He then encountered Mr. Sam Mugabi on the road and fatally hacked him as well. Kalebi’s brother, known only as Musa, tried to intervene and disarm him, but ended up being wounded and falling to the ground, causing panic among the locals who fled to safety. In the chaos that ensued, Kalebi managed to escape into a sugarcane plantation. Determined to bring him to justice, the residents armed themselves with sticks and machetes, tracked down Kalebi, and ultimately beat him to death, as recounted by Mr. Julius Muwanguzi, an eyewitness to the event.
Speculations arose suggesting that Kalebi’s violent behavior may have been influenced by marijuana, an illicit drug he was known to consume. The Busoga North Police Spokesperson, Michael Kasadha, highlighted the prevalence of marijuana cultivation in Butansi sub-county, warning that such incidents were likely to occur due to the community’s refusal to abandon the drug despite police efforts to eradicate its production. Kasadha emphasized the need for residents to reconsider their involvement in drug cultivation in light of the tragic events that transpired.
In a separate investigation, Kasadha disclosed that the police were looking into a murder case involving three individuals in Bugeywa parish, Butansi sub-county, where a man went on a rampage, hacking four people and resulting in the death of two. The injured and deceased victims were promptly transported to Kamuli Hospital for medical attention.
The harrowing events in Busamo village serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked violence and drug-related crimes within the community. The brutal actions of Kalebi and the subsequent response from the residents highlight the need for greater vigilance and cooperation in addressing such criminal behavior to prevent further tragedies from occurring. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding these incidents and are urging residents to prioritize public safety and wellbeing by rejecting illicit activities that pose a threat to the community.
