The Lagos Lawn Tennis Club in Onikan, Lagos is set to host the sixth Azimuth Shipping Lines Junior Tennis Championships, with over 230 young players set to compete in various categories. The tournament will feature Boys and Girls U-12, U-14, and U-16 categories, with matches scheduled to take place from 8.00 am to 4.30 pm.
The event is sponsored by Azimuth Shipping Lines, and the Managing Director, Stephen Owolabi Martins, emphasized that the company’s goal is to promote a “catch them young” initiative that will benefit Nigeria in the future. “Sports development is very important and that is why we enjoy seeing the young ones play. We are optimistic of a good event in the days ahead,” Martins stated.
Tournament Director, Jumoke Yakubu, noted that the number of registrations for the event has been very encouraging. “We will have a draw of 32 or 64, depending on the total number of entries we have in each of the categories. The sponsors have put everything in place for the kids to have a great time during the competition, and we are hopeful for a successful tournament,” Yakubu said.
In the previous edition of the tournament, Amasiani Chukwudubem emerged as the champion in the Boys 12 and Under category, while Holzendorff Lorelay claimed victory in the U-14 Girls category. This year’s tournament is expected to be equally competitive and exciting.
The week-long event will culminate on January 20, providing a platform for young tennis players to showcase their skills and compete at a high level. The Azimuth Shipping Lines Junior Tennis Championships aims to support the development of young talent in Nigeria and provide an opportunity for players to gain competitive experience. With the enthusiastic participation of over 230 players, the tournament promises to be an exciting and rewarding experience for all involved.
