The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the German Federal Government, in collaboration with the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ), have announced the launch of an EU-funded initiative aimed at promoting renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and addressing climate change in Libya.
The initiative, known as the ‘Support to Energy Transition and Climate Change Mitigation’ project, will see UNDP providing support in partnership with relevant National Authorities and Public Institutions. Additionally, the GIZ project, titled “Sustainable Energy and Climate Change Adaptation for Resilience (SECCAR),” is financed by the EU and the German Federal Government and is being implemented jointly with the Prime Minister’s Office in Libya.
A high-level event was held to mark the launch of these projects, bringing together a diverse group of national and international stakeholders to discuss the key challenges and opportunities presented by the initiative. Abdul Salam Al Ansari, Chairman of the Renewable Energy Authority of Libya, expressed commitment to enhancing the future of energy in Libya through strategic development and collaboration with key authorities.
EU Ambassador Nicola Orlando emphasized the importance of building concrete and effective partnerships to address climate change and promote prosperity. He highlighted the collaborative efforts between the EU and Libya to tackle climate change and work towards a common objective. Deputy Ambassador for Germany, Sven Krauspe, stressed the critical importance of climate change adaptation and resilience-building in Libya, citing recent climate-related disasters like the flood in Derna and water scarcity.
Dr. Christopher Laker, UNDP Libya Resident Representative a.i., underscored the timeliness of the partnership, noting the urgent need to address the impacts of climate change in Libya. He highlighted the initiative as a means to enhance adaptive capacities, promote green growth, and transition to renewable energy to safeguard all aspects of Libyan life.
The launch of these projects signifies a step towards addressing the challenges posed by climate change in Libya and fostering sustainable energy solutions. By bringing together international partners, national authorities, and key stakeholders, the initiative aims to create a more resilient and sustainable energy sector in the country.
Moving forward, the collaborative efforts of UNDP, the German Federal Government, and the EU in Libya will play a crucial role in advancing the country’s energy transition, improving energy efficiency, and mitigating the impacts of climate change. Through strategic partnerships and shared objectives, these projects aim to create a more sustainable and vibrant future for Libya and its people.
