The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya has recently signed a new cooperation agreement with the British Government, with the aim of combatting human trafficking and increasing the provision of essential humanitarian assistance along one of the most critical migration routes globally. This agreement marks a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by migrants in Libya and implementing effective measures to ensure their safety and well-being.
The agreement was formalized during a visit by a high-level UK delegation to IOM Libya’s Migrant Response Centre in Tripoli. Through this partnership, IOM Libya will be able to offer specialized protection assistance to survivors of trafficking and migrants in vulnerable situations. Additionally, the agreement will facilitate reintegration assistance for individuals who choose to return to their countries of origin through IOM’s Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) program.
By working closely with embassies, community leaders, and other humanitarian partners on the ground, IOM will enhance the provision of critical healthcare assistance, including mental health and psychosocial support, to migrants and survivors of trafficking. The ultimate goal is to ensure the safety and dignity of migrants throughout their journey and regardless of their status.
Furthermore, IOM will provide reintegration support to migrants who express the willingness to return to their countries of origin, whenever it is safe to do so. This support includes post-arrival reception assistance in the countries of return, individual reintegration assistance packages, as well as social and psychosocial support to facilitate their transition back to their communities.
Tauhid Pasha, IOM Libya’s acting Chief of Mission, emphasized the strategic focus of this new cooperation agreement on preventing trafficking along one of the most complex migratory routes in the world. The agreement will not only enhance IOM’s support to vulnerable migrants in Libya but also foster greater coordination and cooperation with embassies of the countries of origin to ensure the safety and dignity of migrants in vulnerable situations.
Pasha highlighted that the agreement will enable IOM to provide critical support to migrants at all stages of their migration journeys, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding their well-being and ensuring their dignity. The partnership with the British Government signifies a commitment to addressing the challenges faced by migrants in Libya and implementing effective measures to protect their rights and provide essential assistance.
In conclusion, the new cooperation agreement between IOM Libya and the British Government represents a crucial step towards addressing the humanitarian needs of migrants in Libya and preventing human trafficking along critical migration routes. By enhancing protection assistance, healthcare services, and reintegration support, this partnership aims to improve the lives of migrants and survivors of trafficking, ultimately fostering a safer and more dignified migration experience.
