In March 2024, the EuNavFor Med – Irini operation, the European Union air-naval mission tasked with implementing the UN arms embargo in Libya, carried out investigations on a total of 352 merchant ships through radio calls. This was out of a total of 13,844 merchant ships in the area. Additionally, the operation conducted three visits on board ships with the consent of the commanders, bringing the total number of visits carried out since the beginning of the mandate to 603.

The operation also tracked ten suspicious flights out of a total of 1,388 flights. Furthermore, they continued to monitor 25 airports and landing strips, as well as 16 ports and oil terminals in the region. This information was detailed in the monthly report of the European Irini mission, which means “peace” in Greek. The headquarters of this mission are located in Rome.

The EuNavFor Med – Irini operation was launched on 31 March 2020 by the Council of the European Union following the first Berlin Conference. This military operation is primarily maritime and focuses on implementing the United Nations arms embargo on Libya.

The main objective of the mission is to prevent the flow of arms into Libya, which would exacerbate the conflict and threaten the stability of the region. By conducting investigations on merchant ships and monitoring flights, airports, and ports, the operation aims to ensure compliance with the arms embargo and contribute to peace and stability in Libya.

The monthly report highlights the ongoing efforts of the operation to fulfill its mandate. The successful visits conducted on board ships with the consent of the commanders demonstrate the cooperation and support of the maritime community in upholding the arms embargo. Tracking suspicious flights and monitoring airports and ports also play a crucial role in preventing illicit arms trafficking.

The European Irini mission is a key player in the international efforts to promote peace and stability in Libya. By carrying out these operations and monitoring activities, the mission contributes to the overall goal of preventing arms flows and supporting the peace process in the region.

In conclusion, the EuNavFor Med – Irini operation continues to make significant progress in implementing the UN arms embargo in Libya. Through their diligent efforts in investigating ships, tracking flights, and monitoring key locations, the operation plays a vital role in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
