Three key Libyan leaders have come together to emphasize the importance of forming a new unified government to oversee the long-overdue elections in the country. The trio consists of President of the Presidential Council (PC) Mohamed Menfi, Head of High State Council (HSC) Mohamed Takala, and Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Aguila Saleh. These leaders, who are based in Tripoli and Benghazi, have recognized the urgent need for a cohesive government structure to navigate the complexities of Libyan politics.
The political landscape in Libya has been tumultuous for over a decade, with various factions vying for control and power. The scheduled elections in December 2021 failed to materialize, further deepening the crisis. However, with the collective efforts of Menfi, Takala, and Saleh, there is renewed hope for a path forward.
In a joint statement issued after their meeting in Cairo, the leaders called on the UN Mission in Libya and the international community to endorse their proposed formation of a new government. They also agreed to establish a technical committee to address any contentious issues that may arise during the transition process.
Speaking to the media following the meeting, Menfi expressed optimism about the outcomes of their discussions. He emphasized that the measures agreed upon mark a significant step towards fulfilling the aspirations of the Libyan people for fair and transparent elections. Menfi, who assumed his position as President of the PC following the installation of the Government of National Unity (GNU) under Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah in 2021, reiterated the importance of conducting national elections to restore stability and legitimacy to the government.
Despite the ongoing challenges and uncertainties, Dbeibah has remained steadfast in his commitment not to relinquish power to a new government until national elections are held. The House of Representatives, elected in 2014, and the High State Council, established in 2015 as part of a political agreement, represent the diverse political landscape in Libya and play pivotal roles in the country’s governance structure.
The meeting in Cairo, facilitated by Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, signifies a crucial turning point in Libya’s political trajectory. The leaders’ consensus on the formation of a new government and the conduct of elections underscores their dedication to fostering stability and unity in the war-torn nation.
As Libya navigates the complexities of its political transition, the collaborative efforts of Menfi, Takala, and Saleh offer a glimmer of hope for a more peaceful and prosperous future. With the backing of the international community and the support of the UN Mission in Libya, the Libyan people can look forward to a renewed sense of purpose and direction in their quest for democracy and peace.
