UNICEF Libya and the Embassy of Japan have announced their continued support for the flood-affected communities in eastern Libya. This commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting between UNICEF Libya Representative, Michele Servadei, and Japanese Ambassador to Libya, Shimmura Izuru, held in Tripoli. The Government of Japan has donated US$ 1,601,642 to fund the response, which aims to reach 165,000 people, including 75,000 children.

The focus of this aid is on restoring access to emergency primary healthcare services, ensuring critical WASH services and supplies, and providing child protection services through the establishment of a community center and mobile teams. In addition, capacity-building activities and the introduction of climate-resilient technologies will be prioritized to mitigate the impact of severe weather conditions associated with climate change.

This announcement comes at a crucial time for addressing the urgent needs of vulnerable children and families in the flood-affected regions of eastern Libya. UNICEF emphasized the importance of delivering essential services in health and nutrition, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), as well as child protection.

The reopening of the Embassy of Japan in Libya after a decade-long absence also coincided with this announcement. The newly appointed Ambassador Shimmura expressed his commitment to supporting the people of Libya and contributing to their recovery from the recent natural disaster.

The devastating flash floods caused by Storm Daniel on September 10, 2023, severely affected northeastern Libya, including the towns of Derna and Al-Bayda. The loss of life and destruction of critical infrastructure had a significant impact on access to healthcare, water, sanitation, and child protection services in the region.

UNICEF and the Government of Japan’s joint efforts aim to address these challenges and support the affected communities in rebuilding and recovering from the aftermath of the disaster. The funding provided by Japan will enable UNICEF to deliver vital services and assistance to those in need, particularly focusing on the well-being and protection of children and families.

The collaboration between UNICEF and the Embassy of Japan underscores the importance of international partnerships in responding to humanitarian crises and supporting sustainable development. By working together, these organizations aim to make a positive impact and improve the lives of those affected by natural disasters and emergencies in Libya.
