The Foreign Ministers of the member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) recently convened a meeting at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the GCC in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. At this meeting, the Ministers expressed their support for the efforts of the United Nations to facilitate a political solution in Libya. They emphasized the importance of holding elections and unifying state institutions in order to pave the way for stability and development in the country.

The Council of Ministers, consisting of representatives from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the Sultanate of Oman, reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the interests of the Libyan people. They underscored the need to achieve security, stability, and development in Libya while upholding its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. The Ministers also called for an end to external interference in the country’s internal affairs and the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libyan territory.

In their statement, the Gulf Council of Ministers urged all parties in Libya to prioritize wisdom and reason and engage in political dialogue to resolve their differences. This approach, they believe, is essential to safeguarding the supreme interests of the Libyan State and fulfilling the aspirations of its people for development and prosperity. The Council countries expressed their unwavering support for the State of Libya and its political trajectory towards peace and prosperity.

Additionally, the statement acknowledged the decision of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to reopen its embassy in Tripoli, a move that signifies the Kingdom’s commitment to reestablishing diplomatic ties and supporting the rebuilding process in Libya.

The presence of the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, alongside his counterparts from Egypt and Jordan, Sameh Shoukry and Aymen Safadi, at the ministerial meeting underscores the regional importance of the issue. The participation of these key external actors highlights the collective efforts being made to address the complex challenges facing Libya and facilitate a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.

Overall, the GCC Foreign Ministers’ meeting serves as a platform for regional cooperation and coordination on issues of mutual interest, particularly in the context of resolving the conflict in Libya. By reaffirming their support for the political process in Libya, the Council countries are sending a strong signal of solidarity with the Libyan people and their aspirations for a peaceful and prosperous future.
