Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh recently had a conversation with Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, the leader of Sudan’s paramilitary militia Rapid Support Forces (RSF). During this discussion, Dbeibeh urged Hemedti to work towards finding common ground with the various actors involved in the civil war in Sudan in order to bring about peace in the country. Additionally, Dbeibeh extended an invitation to Hemedti to visit Libya, signaling a desire for collaboration and cooperation between the two nations.

The civil war in Sudan erupted in April, primarily due to disagreements surrounding the powers of the army and the RSF, as part of an internationally supported plan for a political transition towards a civil government and eventual elections. One of the major challenges has been the interference of Islamist supporters and former members of the deposed president Omar al Bashir’s regime, who have been backing the positions of the army chief, further complicating the conflict.

The ongoing conflict has had devastating consequences for Sudan, with significant parts of the country, including the capital Khartoum, being destroyed. The United Nations estimates that more than 13,000 people have lost their lives as a result of the fighting. The RSF currently holds control over much of Khartoum and western Sudan and has recently made significant military advancements, extending its reach from its traditional bases in Darfur to attack the town of Babanusa in western Kordofan state.

In an effort to address the escalating crisis and bring about a resolution to the conflict, Dbeibeh’s call for dialogue and cooperation with Hemedti is a significant step towards peace in Sudan. By encouraging Hemedti to engage with the various stakeholders involved in the conflict, there is hope that a path towards reconciliation and stability can be forged.

It is essential for all parties involved in the conflict to prioritize the well-being of the Sudanese people and work towards a peaceful resolution that can pave the way for a more prosperous and stable future for the nation. The international community must also play a role in supporting these efforts and facilitating dialogue between the conflicting parties to ensure a sustainable peace process.

Through diplomatic efforts and constructive engagement, there is a possibility of finding a lasting solution to the conflict in Sudan. By fostering dialogue, understanding, and a commitment to peace, the potential for reconciliation and stability in the region can be realized. It is imperative for leaders like Dbeibeh and Hemedti to seize this opportunity to work towards a peaceful resolution that will benefit the people of Sudan and contribute to the overall stability of the region.
