Renowned human rights lawyer Cllr Tiawan Saye Gongloe has raised concerns about the selective investigation and prosecution practices of President Joseph Nyumah Boakai’s Assets Recovery Team. In a statement at the Alternative National Congress (ANC) headquarters, Cllr. Gongloe emphasized the importance of holistic and credible enforcement in the fight against corruption.
According to Cllr. Gongloe, selective justice is a form of injustice and cannot effectively combat corruption in Liberia. He stressed the need for the Assets Recovery Team to investigate all major companies in the country, such as Western Cluster, Bea Mountain, AML, and GVL, to uncover any corrupt practices. By doing so, Cllr. Gongloe believes that the Liberian people will have more confidence in the task force’s efforts.
Cllr. Gongloe also pointed out the connection between government officials holding major contracts and the need for transparency in their financial dealings. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that those who receive government contracts are also fulfilling their tax obligations and acquiring properties through legal means. By addressing these issues, Cllr. Gongloe hopes to promote a more transparent and accountable system in Liberia.
As a defeated presidential candidate from the Liberian People’s Party, Cllr. Gongloe acknowledged the widespread public awareness of corruption within the country. He urged the Assets Recovery Team to adopt a comprehensive approach to fighting corruption rather than targeting specific individuals or companies. In his view, a holistic and general approach is essential to root out corruption at all levels of society.
Overall, Cllr. Gongloe’s message underscores the importance of transparency, accountability, and integrity in governance. He calls for a unified effort to combat corruption, emphasizing the need for all sectors of society to work together towards a common goal of a more just and equitable Liberia. Through his advocacy for holistic and creditable enforcement, Cllr. Gongloe hopes to inspire positive change and promote a culture of integrity in the country.
