Nimba County, located in Liberia, gained notoriety as the launchpad of the country’s brutal civil war in 1989. Unfortunately, the county continues to struggle with violence, as demonstrated by a recent incident where a male resident chopped off the left hand of a woman for trespassing on his property. In a disturbing turn of events, the suspect then faced a revenge attack in the form of arson, resulting in his property being burnt down.
The victim, a 31-year-old woman named Jessica Davis, fell prey to the violent actions of Daniel S. Tokpah, an accountant at Nimba University. The altercation occurred in the Gbloryee community, where Tokpah attacked Davis during a quarrel at 6:45 a.m. Allegedly, Davis was simply passing through Tokpah’s yard on her way to the market to buy food for her father-in-law when the brutal assault took place.
According to community chairman Prince Garwuo, this was not an isolated incident. Several residents of the Gbloryee community had previously been targeted by Tokpah for passing through his yard. It was revealed that Tokpah had a history of violence and disruptive behavior since moving into the community, causing distress and fear among its residents.
One of Tokpah’s previous victims, Nohn Lofen, recounted a harrowing experience where she narrowly escaped death at the hands of the suspect. She revealed that Tokpah had also attempted to harm his own wife, leading to further tensions in the community. Eyewitnesses corroborated these testimonies, stating that Tokpah often brandished a cutlass and threatened violence towards anyone who crossed his path.
The attack on Jessica Davis left her severely wounded, resulting in the loss of her left hand. She was rushed to Ganta United Methodist Hospital for medical treatment, while community members apprehended Tokpah and escorted him to the local police station. However, a crowd of angry residents gathered outside the station, demanding swift justice and threatening to escalate the situation by setting the station on fire.
To prevent further violence, additional security forces from surrounding areas were called in to diffuse the tension. Despite the chaos, Tokpah was placed in police custody pending a thorough investigation into the incident. Residents of the Gbloryee community expressed concern over Tokpah’s behavior and the need for accountability to prevent such acts of violence in the future.
The troubling events in Nimba County serve as a stark reminder of the persistent challenges faced by communities recovering from conflict and instability. The cycle of violence and retribution must be broken through effective law enforcement and community engagement to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents. The authorities must address the root causes of such incidents and implement measures to promote peace and harmony in Nimba County and beyond.
