The World Health Organization (WHO) is gearing up to celebrate World Health Day on April 7, 2024, under the theme “My Health, My Right.” In preparation for the event, a press conference was held on March 26, 2024, in Monrovia, where WHO Country Representative Dr. Clement Peter emphasized the importance of highlighting health as a fundamental human right in the face of increasing global and African threats.

Dr. Peter pointed out that Liberia, a country facing various health challenges, strongly resonates with this year’s theme. Despite making strides in improving its healthcare system, Liberia still experiences setbacks that need to be addressed. Dr. Peter stressed the need for a united effort to establish a resilient and inclusive health system that benefits everyone.

The World Health Day celebrations will span from March 28 to April 8, 2024, with a series of events aimed at raising awareness about the significance of health as a human right. One of the focal points of the commemoration will be shedding light on the adverse health consequences of female genital mutilation (FGM) on girls and women through public discussions. Additionally, there will be advocacy for equal access to quality healthcare services for all Liberians, including marginalized groups like individuals with disabilities.

On March 28, an advocacy event will be held to promote the uptake of HPV vaccines for girls aged 9-14 years at F. Sham of Faith Girls School in Montserrado. This initiative aims to ensure that young girls are protected against the human papillomavirus, reducing their risk of cervical cancer in the future. On April 2, a dialogue will take place with persons living with disabilities at the Montserrado Rehabilitation Centre located at JFK Hospital.

The overarching goal of the World Health Day celebrations is to foster a culture of health as a basic human right and advocate for policies and practices that prioritize the well-being of all individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances. By raising awareness, engaging in dialogue, and advocating for equitable access to healthcare, the WHO and its partners hope to create a society where everyone can lead healthy and fulfilling lives.

In conclusion, the upcoming World Health Day celebration symbolizes a collective effort to reaffirm health as a fundamental right for all individuals. By addressing the pressing health challenges facing Liberia and other countries, we can work towards building a more inclusive and resilient healthcare system that meets the needs of all people. Let us join hands in promoting health and well-being for everyone, because when it comes to health, it is truly “My Health, My Right.”
