The recent incident involving Cllr. Molfie Kanneh, the ruling Unity Party officials, and other government officials at the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) has caused quite a stir in Monrovia, Liberia. On Monday, March 5, 2024, Cllr. Kanneh went to meet with NASSCORP’s senior management team to present his appointment letter as the Officer-in-Charge, only to be met with resistance.
The Chairman of the ruling Unity Party, Rev. Luther Tarpeh, was quick to address accusations that they were attempting to take over NASSCORP and install a new institutional head. In a press conference held on March 6, Rev. Tarpeh clarified that the purpose of their visit was not to forcefully take over jobs at NASSCORP, as some had insinuated.
It was revealed that the current Director General of NASSCORP, Mr. Dewitt vonBalmoos, still had about three years left in his tenure when Cllr. Kanneh presented his appointment letter. President Joseph Nyumah Boakai had recently appointed Cllr. Kanneh to NASSCORP, leading to confusion and tension at the institution.
Chairman Tarpeh emphasized that their visit was simply to present the appointment letter from the President of Liberia and not to forcefully take over the organization. He expressed frustration at the accusations leveled against them and stated that the allegations were false and misleading.
Despite the misunderstanding, Chairman Tarpeh explained that they were eventually asked to leave and were told that the nomination should be placed on the Executive Mansion website by the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs. He emphasized that they are willing to abide by the correct procedures and respect the institution’s hierarchy.
Chairman Tarpeh also highlighted the civil and responsible nature of the Unity Party, stating that they were there to fulfill their duty and not to cause disruption. He mentioned that it is a tradition for the party chairman and other officials to visit and support new leaders in various entities.
In conclusion, Chairman Tarpeh clarified that their intentions were not malicious, and they were simply following protocol by presenting the appointment letter to the leadership of NASSCORP. The incident at NASSCORP has shed light on the importance of proper communication and transparency in government appointments and transitions. It serves as a reminder of the need for clarity and adherence to established procedures in all government institutions.
