Former Liberian Foreign Minister, Madam Olubanke King-Akerele, has raised concerns about the security threats facing Liberia and the Sub-region. In a proposal presented in Monrovia on 14 March 2024, she suggested that President Joseph Nyumah Boakai should seek an external security assessment of the country to address these pressing issues.
During the 95th birthday celebration of the late Madam Mary Brownell in Central Monrovia, Amb. King-Akerele emphasized the importance of assessing Liberia’s security situation. She highlighted the presence of hate speech, violence, and hostility across the nation, warning that these factors could lead to undesirable outcomes if left unchecked.
Amb. King-Akerele urged the new administration under President Boakai to request the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations Mission in Ivory Coast (UNM) to conduct a thorough security assessment and evaluation of Liberia. She emphasized the need for all parties, especially the opposition, to demonstrate restraint and respect as the country navigates through potential security threats.
Furthermore, Amb. King-Akerele called out former President George M. Weah’s Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) for promoting hate speech and engaging in provocative activities. She urged Weah to uphold the respect and recognition that both he and Liberia have received on the international stage. Drawing from her experiences in Uganda and Rwanda, she highlighted the dangers of incendiary rhetoric and called for unity and responsible leadership to safeguard the nation’s stability.
The celebration of Madam Mary Brownell’s birthday brought together a diverse group of citizens, including prominent statesmen and women such as Dr. Togba Nah Tipoteh, Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe, and Dr. H. Boimah Fahnbulleh. The event served as a platform to honor individuals who have contributed to peace, democracy, and security in Liberia. Over twelve individuals were recognized with the Judge Emma Shannon Walser Medal of Good Governance, the Rule of Law, and Patriotism for their outstanding service to society.
In conclusion, Amb. Olubanke King-Akerele’s proposal for a comprehensive security assessment of Liberia underscores the importance of addressing security threats in the region. Her call for unity, respect, and responsible leadership resonates with the need to protect Liberia’s hard-won peace and prevent any potential destabilizing influences. As the country moves forward under President Boakai’s leadership, it is crucial for all stakeholders to prioritize national security and collective well-being.
