The passing of Hon. Dr. Johnson N. Gwaikolo on this day is a significant loss to the United Methodist Church, the nation, his family, and countless friends. His death leaves a void that cannot be filled and his absence will be deeply felt by all those who knew him.

I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Gwaikolo on the night of February 18, just hours before his passing. We were discussing the financial contribution of the United Methodist Church Legislative Caucus to the rally at the 191st Annual Conference. He reported a contribution of US$3500 and we also discussed his possible successor as Coordinator of the Caucus. It was a shock to hear of his passing just 12 hours later.

I have known Dr. Gwaikolo since 1991, during the early days of the civil war. He was the Deputy Speaker and later Speaker of the Interim Legislative Assembly, working alongside other fighters for social justice. During that time, I worked tirelessly with him and the ILA in my position as Special Advisor to President Sawyer on the Peace Process. Dr. Gwaikolo was a dedicated peacemaker, negotiator, and political leader who played a significant role in working towards peace in the country. It is no surprise that our last conversation revolved around leadership and service to humanity in Liberia.

His passing is a great loss to the community and his memory will be cherished by all who knew him. The impact of Dr. Gwaikolo’s dedication and leadership will be felt for years to come. May his soul rest in perfect peace.
