Self-immolator activist Leroy Archie Ponpon has been awarded the International Service Award (ISA) by the A.M. Kyne Collegiate Resource Center in conjunction with the Office of the First Lady of Liberia, Madam Kartuma Yarta Boakai. This recognition is a tribute to his courageous stance against rights abuse and societal issues, exemplified by his act of setting himself on fire in 2020 to highlight the issue of salary delays for judicial staffers.
The award ceremony took place on March 2, 2024, at Effort Baptist Church in Paynesville, where Ponpon, along with 46 other individuals, was honored for their significant contributions to Liberian society. Despite fading from the public eye since his drastic protest, Ponpon’s unwavering dedication to social justice was acknowledged and celebrated through this prestigious award.
Leroy Archie Ponpon’s bold actions, including his self-immolation in front of the Temple of Justice in Monrovia, marked a pivotal moment in Liberian history. His willingness to sacrifice himself in the fight against injustice captured the attention of the world and serves as a reminder of the power of individual activism.
Dr. Adam M. Kyne, co-host of the award ceremony, highlighted Ponpon’s role in advocating for human rights violations and credited him for positively influencing the lives of Liberian citizens. Ponpon’s commitment to social justice was further demonstrated in his hunger strike in front of the United States Embassy in 2018, demanding accountability from then President George Manneh Weah.
The International Service Award aims to recognize unnoticed Liberians who have shown exceptional patriotism and dedication to addressing societal issues. Ambassador Dr. Michelle E. Richards, head of the award team, emphasized the importance of honoring individuals who are making meaningful impacts in their communities, echoing her own commitment to advocating for human rights.
In his acceptance speech, Leroy Archie Ponpon expressed gratitude for the global recognition and acknowledged the responsibility it brings. He affirmed his dedication to continue advocating for human rights and social justice, using his platform to address pressing issues in a comprehensive and impactful manner.
The First Lady of Liberia, Madam Kartuma Yarta Boakai, commended Ponpon and the other honorees for their selfless service and dedication to creating a better future for their nation. She highlighted their potential to inspire change and uplift those around them, emphasizing the transformative power of collective action.
As Ponpon receives the International Service Award, he stands as a symbol of courage and resilience in the face of adversity.
