The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently seeking support from lawmakers in response to alleged past political influences that hindered the agency’s ability to enforce regulations against East International Company. This issue has arisen in the context of the construction of the ELWA-Roberts International Airport (RIA) highway.

According to a recent EPA report presented to the House of Representatives, there have been numerous occupational, health, and safety concerns observed at the East International Company construction site. A community survey conducted by the EPA indicated that a significant number of individuals reported regular dust exposure, particularly during afternoon hours, leading to respiratory problems such as coughing and asthma among residents.

To address these issues, the EPA dispatched a team of environmental technicians to conduct a thorough assessment of the situation. The assessment included evaluating air quality at various points along the construction area, performing physical inspections, and gathering feedback from local residents on the dust pollution.

During a recent meeting held by the House Joint Committee on Public Works, Rural Development, the EPA presented its investigative findings. The agency’s study of East International Company’s operations revealed several violations, including the expiration of the company’s EPA permit, failure to submit required monitoring reports, inadequate provision of personal protective equipment for workers, and non-compliance with environmental regulations due to past political influences.

One concerning revelation from the EPA investigation was that the levels of Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM 2.5) in the air, a dust particle known to cause respiratory issues, exceeded the World Health Organization’s permissible limit. As a result, the EPA is planning to engage with East International Company to address compliance issues, renew their license, and rectify environmental irregularities.

EPA Acting Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel Urey Yarkparwolo has appealed to the 55th National Legislature for support in enhancing the agency’s efficiency and effectiveness. He emphasized the importance of the EPA’s role as a revenue-generating entity for the government, especially in light of some entities and companies displaying non-compliance towards the agency’s regulations.

Additionally, the EPA recommended that East International Company management implement traffic control measures to reduce dust levels, including measures to control truck speeds and ensure road safety during construction activities. These recommendations were emphasized during a recent House Committee hearing on the matter.

In conclusion, the EPA’s efforts to address the environmental and health concerns associated with the construction of the RIA highway highlight the importance of regulatory enforcement and compliance. By seeking support from lawmakers and advocating for increased oversight of companies like East International, the EPA aims to protect the health and well-being of communities affected by these developments.
