The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia has taken a significant step to address national security concerns by directing the immediate return of all diplomatic and service passports. This directive was announced by Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti on Monday, March 18, with a deadline set for April 18, 2024, for the return of passports exceeding two years in validity.
In tandem with the return of these passports, the Ministry also suspended the Revised Passport Regulations that were put in place by the previous administration in July 2023. Instead, the March 2016 Passport Regulations will be reinstated with immediate effect. This move is aimed at enhancing national security measures and safeguarding the integrity of Liberia’s passport system.
Minister Nyanti emphasized that individuals holding multiple diplomatic, official, or service passports will have the extra passports revoked immediately. Those with legitimate reasons for possessing multiple passports are advised to seek clarification from the Legal Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ineligible citizens and non-citizens holding these passports are instructed to return them to the Ministry, as failure to comply will result in the cancellation of the passports.
The issuance of diplomatic, official, and service passports will now be subject to strict eligibility criteria, with the Ministry covering the replacement costs free of charge for citizens. For individuals residing outside the country, they are instructed to visit the nearest Liberian embassy or consulate for passport replacement.
While acknowledging the potential inconvenience that this directive may cause, Minister Nyanti stressed the importance of compliance for national security reasons. The government is committed to facilitating a smooth transition process and providing assistance to those affected by the passport replacement procedure.
The Minister’s announcement at the Ministry of Information, Culture Affairs, and Tourism briefing underscored the government’s proactive approach to addressing security challenges and enhancing border security measures. The suspension of the Revised Passport Regulations reflects a strategic decision to maintain the integrity of Liberia’s passport system and strengthen security protocols.
In conclusion, Minister Nyanti urged all citizens and residents to cooperate with the directive and comply with the return of passports to avoid complications during travel. The government’s commitment to safeguarding national security interests remains unwavering, and this step is a testament to its dedication to ensuring the safety and security of all individuals within Liberia.
