The failed corporate coup at the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) on March 4, led by Unity Party Chairman Rev. Luther Tarpeh, two senators, a commerce minister, and two seasoned lawyers, has raised questions about the tactics of the UP rescue mission. This event, inspired by a similar incident at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), drew comparisons to Herald’s brutal execution of Jesus’s disciples as described in the Bible.
Prior to the failed coup at NASSCORP, members of the Unity Party had successfully ousted Prof. Wilson Tarpeh from the EPA. Dr. Emmanuel Urey Yarkpawolo, running mate to Cllr. Tiawon Gongloe in the 2023 Presidential election, swiftly took over as the officer-in-charge at the EPA amidst protests from UP partisans. This sudden power shift at the EPA mirrored the changing political landscape in Liberia.
At NASSCORP, Cllr. Moiffie Kanneh, the designated officer-in-charge, gathered a group of high-profile government officials and party members to stage a takeover of the entity. However, their attempt was unsuccessful, leading to embarrassment and criticism of their actions. The UP rescue mission, which promised change and a departure from the tactics of the Coalition of Democratic Change (CDC), appeared desperate and misguided in their approach.
President Joseph N. Boakai’s appointment of Cllr. Kanneh was quickly rescinded after it was revealed that the current Director General of NASSCORP still had years left in his tenure. This decision to withdraw the appointment was made to avoid controversy and maintain stability within the organization. Despite this setback, Cllr. Kanneh and his supporters believed that a bold corporate coup could succeed, as seen in previous incidents at the EPA.
Dressed in a pink suit and armed with a prepared speech, Cllr. Kanneh attempted to intimidate the NASSCORP management team, accompanied by influential figures from the government and the Unity Party. However, their actions only mirrored the tactics of the CDC, tarnishing the reputation of the UP in the process. The failed coup highlighted the lack of cohesion and strategic planning within the party, undermining their credibility and authority.
In conclusion, the failed corporate coup at NASSCORP exposed the flaws and shortcomings of the UP rescue mission. The misguided attempt to seize power through force and intimidation only served to weaken their position and erode public trust. Moving forward, the Unity Party must reassess its tactics and prioritize transparency, accountability, and cooperation to regain credibility and support from the Liberian people.
