The Monrovia City Corporation has resumed its First Saturday Cleanup Exercise and is calling for community ownership and involvement to keep the city clean, green, and safe. Mayor John-Charuk Siafa emphasized the importance of residents taking responsibility and participating in the cleanup efforts. He urged the people of Monrovia to support the clean city initiative and actively contribute to creating a hygienic environment.

The First Saturday Cleanup Exercise, mandated by the municipal administration, will take place on the first Saturday of each month. Mayor Siafa, along with the Monrovia City Government staff, led the city in a thorough cleaning operation to kickstart the initiative. They were seen cleaning the streets while also raising awareness in various areas.

The theme for the rebooted cleanup exercise is “Own your street, Own your city, Keep it clean,” aiming to promote civic and environmental stewardship among residents. The goal of the awareness campaign was to revive the spirit of the First Saturday initiative and encourage community engagement in keeping the city clean.

The cleanup exercise was carried out simultaneously across Monrovia, with active participation from various groups such as the Ministry of Public Works, JNB/JKK volunteers, and the Monrovia Lions Club. Special attention was given to Center Street, a major waste hotspot in the city, to make it cleaner and greener.

One particular challenge addressed during the cleanup was the issue of garbage disposal at Center Street Cemetery in Central Monrovia. The cemetery has become a dumping ground for garbage, with many underprivileged young people, including drug abusers, residing in the area. Mayor Siafa reiterated his commitment to providing strong leadership to ensure that the Monrovia City Corporation upholds its core values.

Additionally, Mayor Siafa announced the MCC’s plan to implement a long-term waste management strategy to ensure the city remains clean and safe. He acknowledged the challenges faced by Monrovia and appealed to the national government and partners for increased funding and material support to help address these issues effectively.

In conclusion, the resumption of the First Saturday Cleanup Exercise in Monrovia underscores the importance of community involvement in maintaining a clean and safe environment. By working together and taking ownership of their city, residents can make a significant impact on the cleanliness and sustainability of Monrovia.
