The Western Region Alliance for Sustainable Development has praised Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for taking swift action in response to the recent citizens’ action at the Bea Mountain concession company. The President has set up a professional team of security experts and other government officials to independently investigate the situation.

The group expressed sadness over the deaths of two Liberians during the protests and questioned the legitimacy of Representative Mohammed Dosi for supporting the protestors. They believe that as a lawmaker, he should be seeking the welfare of citizens through legal means rather than resorting to violence.

The Alliance also commended President Boakai for including ministries such as Mines and Energy, Justice, Labor, the National Bureau of Concession, and the Liberia National Police in the investigation committee. They urged the committee to be impartial in uncovering the reasons behind the protest and finding solutions to prevent future incidents.

While acknowledging that some of the citizens’ concerns may be legitimate, the Alliance condemned their approach, which they felt was not in the best interest of peaceful coexistence and the overall peace of the country. They believed that there were opportunities for negotiation with local authorities and government agencies to address their grievances.

The Alliance called on the new Police Inspector-General, Col. Gregory Coleman, to ensure that those responsible for using live bullets against unarmed citizens are brought to justice. They denounced the unprofessional use of government firearms and called for accountability in such actions.

The group also criticized the citizens for taking the law into their own hands and attacking security personnel at the concession company, which they viewed as a threat to the concession climate of the country.

The Alliance emphasized the importance of the investigation into the Bea Mountain disturbance as a human rights issue and urged for timely submission of findings to the public.

Overall, the Western Region Alliance for Sustainable Development stands against violence and emphasizes the need for peaceful dialogue and legal channels to address grievances and ensure the welfare of all citizens. They support the President’s efforts to investigate the recent events and find solutions to prevent future conflicts.
