Former President George Weah of Liberia, despite previously vowing to not participate in any elections in the country after his defeat in the 2023 presidential runoff election, is now reportedly planning to run for the presidency again in 2029. This revelation came from Lenn Eugene Nagbe, the former National Campaign Chairman of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), who shared that Weah will be on the ballot for the upcoming election.

Despite his earlier declaration, Weah continues to be the Political Leader and Standard-bearer of the main opposition Coalition for Democratic Change. Nagbe, who is a close friend of Weah and served as the former Maritime Commissioner under the CDC regime, revealed that the former President will be representing the former ruling party in the upcoming presidential elections to compete with other candidates.

Speaking on various national security issues concerning Weah on Freedom FM, Nagbe mentioned that Weah is working on restructuring the leadership of the party following its defeat. He also mentioned that Weah is collaborating with other political parties, including those within the coalition.

Addressing the security concerns surrounding Weah, Nagbe clarified that the former President did not request 38 Executive Protective Service (EPS) agents, as rumored. However, he highlighted Weah’s concerns regarding changes in EPS agents assigned to him, stating that it posed a significant security threat. Nagbe emphasized the importance of having security personnel that Weah is familiar with, especially those who have access to his private spaces.

If the security issue is not resolved by the end of March, Nagbe stated that Weah may request the removal of the EPS agents and rely on the support of the Liberian people, particularly CDC supporters, to protect him.

Regarding the provision of a vehicle by the government, Nagbe disclosed that Weah has yet to receive one from President Joseph Boakai’s administration. In contrast, when Weah assumed power in 2018, he purchased vehicles for former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and former Vice President (now President) Joseph Boakai. The vehicles currently used by Weah are private and not government-provided.

In conclusion, despite previous assertions, George Weah appears to be preparing for a political comeback in Liberia’s 2029 presidential elections. His close associates and supporters are working towards restructuring the party leadership and addressing security concerns to ensure a successful campaign. The dynamics of Liberian politics continue to evolve, with Weah’s potential candidacy adding a significant dimension to the political landscape.
