Jerolinmek M. Piah, the Information Minister-designate, recently made a passionate plea to the Legislature to repeal the military law that was established during the reign of slain Liberian President Samuel Doe. His primary objective behind this call is to ensure that the Liberia Broadcasting System (ELBC) becomes accessible to all individuals and not just a mouthpiece for the national government.
During his confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee on Information and Broadcasting, chaired by Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon, Piah emphasized the need for the state broadcaster to reflect the principles of democracy. He expressed his belief that the ELBC should serve as a platform for every citizen to voice their opinions, regardless of their political affiliations.
Piah stressed his full support for the Liberia Broadcasting Corporation to remain state-owned. However, he also highlighted the importance of holding individuals accountable for making inflammatory or undemocratic statements on the airwaves. He emphasized that while all actors should have the opportunity to express their views, those who use the platform to incite violence or spread false allegations should be held responsible.
The Information Minister designate also raised concerns about the current conditions at the Liberia Broadcasting System. He noted that employees have been demoralized, with some not even having access to transportation to get to work. Piah revealed that for the past six years, only the Minister of Information, Culture Affairs and Tourism had an assigned vehicle, leaving other employees to rely on their own means of transportation.
In light of these challenges, Piah urged the Liberian Senate to support the ministry in addressing these issues and improving the working conditions for all employees. He emphasized that it is unacceptable for workers to be paid minimal wages while also being responsible for their own transportation to and from work.
Furthermore, Piah highlighted the need for the legislation governing the Liberia Broadcasting System to be revised and finalized by the national legislature. He emphasized that once this legislation is in place, it is essential for the institution to adhere to its provisions without discretion. Piah underscored the importance of following the law and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their political status, have access to the ELBC platform.
Overall, Jerolinmek M. Piah’s call for the repeal of the military law and his advocacy for a more inclusive and accountable Liberia Broadcasting System reflect his commitment to promoting democracy and ensuring that all voices are heard in the country. His efforts to address the challenges facing the ministry and its employees demonstrate his dedication to improving the working conditions and overall environment at the ELBC.
