The Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA) has commenced the development of a comprehensive five-year strategic plan, covering the period 2024-2029, to steer the institution’s activities in the coming years. The initiative was launched with a two-day strategic working retreat held in Ganta, Nimba County, under the theme, “Rethinking And Setting The Agenda for a Vibrant Maritime Sector,” starting on April 4, 2024.
During the retreat, Commissioner/CEO of LiMA, Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe, Sr., emphasized the importance of creating a focused strategy that assigns specific tasks to individuals and departments within the organization. He stressed the need for clear timelines and regular follow-ups to ensure accountability and successful implementation of the plan. Commissioner Lighe also highlighted the collaboration between external consultants and the in-house technical team to provide independent perspectives and expertise in the strategic planning process.
The strategic planning session aims to build on the achievements of the institution while addressing any existing challenges, without undermining the efforts of previous leadership. Commissioner Lighe reiterated the commitment to enhancing the value of the Liberia Maritime Authority and sustaining its reputation as a respected institution in the maritime sector.
Leading the development of the multi-year strategic document, Director of Corporate Strategy, John Cuffey, emphasized the inclusive nature of the process, involving input from all senior staff members. He praised the hands-on approach of the new Commissioner, who is keen on expediting the institution’s operations without delay. Mr. Cuffey highlighted the goal of the retreat to assess the current status of the institution and outline a roadmap for its future growth and development over the next five years and beyond.
The two-day retreat provided an opportunity for detailed analysis, focusing on identifying strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats, resource mobilization, and defining a clear vision and mission for achieving the objectives of the strategic plan. The emphasis was on ensuring that the outcomes of the retreat translate into actionable steps for implementation.
The collaborative effort between internal and external stakeholders, under the guidance of Commissioner Lighe and Director Cuffey, reflects a proactive approach to strategic planning within the Liberia Maritime Authority. The dedication to creating a cohesive and effective roadmap for the institution’s future demonstrates a commitment to excellence and continuous improvement in the maritime sector. As the strategic planning process unfolds, the focus remains on driving innovation, efficiency, and sustainability in maritime operations for the benefit of all stakeholders involved.
