Monrovia-February-29-TNR: The President of the Liberia Broadcasting System Workers Union, Joseph Sayon, has expressed concern over the poor living conditions of employees at the institution. State Radio staff have been advocating for better wages that reflect the challenges they face in their daily lives as state broadcasters.

Addressing the inadequate living conditions that state broadcasters have endured under past and present governments, President Sayon took to his official social media page to highlight the need for change. He emphasized that the lives of journalists at the State Broadcaster must improve and called for immediate action to address the situation.

President Sayon also lamented the fact that workers at LBS are unable to access proper medical care due to their low salaries. He noted that some employees have died from treatable illnesses because they could not afford to go to a standard hospital, underscoring the urgent need for reform at LBS.

The tragic death of French Newscaster Steve Silibi, who did not receive the necessary assistance during his illness, further illustrates the dire circumstances facing LBS employees. Despite efforts by the workers union to seek help for Silibi, no support was forthcoming, leading to his untimely death.

In his role as Union president, Sayon has outlined his vision for improving the welfare of LBS workers. He is committed to dignifying workers in all aspects and creating a peaceful working environment as his top priority.

The inadequate wages for state radio workers have taken a toll on the staff, resulting in illness and even death for employees who have dedicated years to their jobs. The late Mulbah Keesellie, a simple English Newscaster, and John Kumeh, a producer and newscaster who resigned due to health reasons, are among those who have suffered without proper assistance. Steve Silibi, a French Newscaster, also faced challenges due to the poor working conditions before his passing.

President Sayon’s advocacy for better wages and improved working conditions for LBS employees highlights the urgent need for change within the institution. It is essential to prioritize the well-being of workers and ensure they have access to adequate healthcare and support to prevent further tragedies within the organization.
