On Monday, March 4, 2024, the compound of the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) in Monrovia witnessed a dramatic scene when officials of the Unity Party attempted to introduce a purported presidential nominee but were ultimately rejected and asked to seek confirmation from the Executive Mansion. The incident involved Cllr. Molfie Kanneh, who arrived with senior officials of the UP to present an appointment letter from the President.
The current Director General of NASSCORP, Mr. Dewitt vonBalmoos, still had three years remaining in his tenure, and the senior management team at NASSCORP informed Cllr. Kanneh that Mr. vonBalmoos was still in charge and had not received any official communication from the Executive Mansion regarding a change in leadership.
Despite Cllr. Kanneh’s presentation of the appointment letter, the head of the senior management team reiterated that Mr. vonBalmoos was still recognized as the Director General and advised Cllr. Kanneh to clarifying the situation with the Executive Mansion before proceeding further.
Faced with this setback, Cllr. Kanneh decided not to engage in a prolonged discussion and kept his letter back in its envelope. The confusion surrounding presidential nominations and their impact on existing tenured positions raised questions about the administration of President Boakai.
The incident at NASSCORP highlighted the importance of proper communication and adherence to established procedures in government appointments. It also underscored the need for clarity and transparency in the appointment process to avoid misunderstandings and conflicts.
Moving forward, it is crucial for all parties involved in the nomination and appointment process to ensure that information is disseminated accurately and promptly to prevent disruptions in governance and maintain the integrity of public institutions.
The incident at NASSCORP served as a reminder of the complexities and challenges involved in governance and reaffirmed the need for adherence to established protocols and procedures to ensure smooth transitions and effective leadership within government agencies. It also emphasized the importance of respecting existing tenures and following due process in making any changes to leadership positions.
