In recent weeks, speculation has been rife on social media and other platforms about a potential protest by disgruntled employees, including Directors of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), in Monrovia. The protest is reportedly aimed at pressuring the Liberian Government to investigate the fisheries management under Madam Emma Metieh Glassco, whom they allege was dismissed due to corruption.
According to reports from the Fisheries Journal, there are unconfirmed claims that Madam Marthaline Dargoseh has been appointed as the Officer-In-Charge of NaFAA in the interim, until a replacement for Madam Glassco is officially announced. The allegations against Glassco include accusations of poor leadership, corruption, illegal dismissals, and abusive behavior towards employees.
In response to these rumors, Emma Metieh Glassco, the Director General of NaFAA, took to social media to dismiss the planned protest as baseless and unfounded. She refuted the claims made against her leadership and challenged her detractors to confront her directly if they have any grievances.
Supporters of the Unity Party, such as Zlekerwon Baros Lyainrem, reminded Glassco of her past support for the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) during the 2023 elections, which saw Joseph Nyuma Boakai of the Unity Party emerge victorious. They criticized Glassco for allegedly violating the code of conduct for public servants by openly supporting a political party while holding a position in government. They suggested that her political affiliations could cost her job in the long run.
Meanwhile, others like James Johnson expressed concern about the prevalence of political interference in government institutions at the expense of professionalism. They praised Glassco for her achievements in transforming NaFAA and attracting international recognition for the fisheries sector, despite facing opposition from within the organization.
Joshua Colkahn empathized with Glassco’s predicament, acknowledging the political motives behind the planned protest. He highlighted the challenges faced by Glassco in maintaining her position amidst political tensions and power struggles within NaFAA and other government agencies.
The ongoing controversy surrounding Emma Metieh Glassco and NaFAA underscores the complex and often contentious nature of governance in Liberia. The intersection of politics, personal allegiances, and professional responsibilities continues to shape the dynamics within key government institutions, with far-reaching implications for accountability and transparency in the country’s public sector. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the parties involved will navigate these challenges and uphold the principles of good governance and ethical leadership.
