The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a new acting Executive Director, Dr. Emmanuel Urey-Yarkpawolo, who has made it clear that he plans to audit his predecessor, Prof. Wilson Tarpeh, and his administration. This decision comes in response to a recommendation from Mr. James Flomoyan and his team’s assessment of the previous administration.

During his inauguration on Monday, 19 February 2024, Dr. Urey-Yarkpawolo expressed his gratitude to Mr. James Flomoyan and his team, who were supervised by Hon. Dr. Louise Kpoto, for their report and recommendations. He stated that part of their recommendations called for an audit to be conducted, and he is committed to ensuring that this is carried out.

Dr. Urey-Yarkpawolo emphasized the importance of regular auditing as a good organizational practice and assured national and international partners that the EPA is in the process of significant transformation. He promised that within a year, the EPA would be a force for good, not only for Liberia but for the global community. He urged partners to be transparent with the EPA, emphasizing that actions speak louder than words.

He assured partners that they would witness the positive changes that his administration will bring to the EPA and invited them to be an integral part of this transformation. Dr. Urey-Yarkpawolo also highlighted that his administration would conduct a thorough review of the past plans, ongoing projects, and areas that require immediate attention over the next few days.

While acknowledging the positive work done by the previous administration, Dr. Urey-Yarkpawolo affirmed that his administration would build on the achievements of Prof. Wilson Tarpeh’s leadership. He mentioned that he has reviewed the Strategic Plan of the EPA from 2022 to 2026 and the employee handbook, and intends to enforce existing policies, laws, and regulations, in addition to implementing innovative practices.

Dr. Urey-Yarkpawolo emphasized the importance of employees’ welfare and stated that they would be properly placed according to their qualifications. He also highlighted the administration’s plan to conduct thorough employee appraisals to identify strengths and weaknesses, allowing for the reshuffling of staff for proper placement.

Furthermore, Dr. Urey-Yarkpawolo assured all employees that they would receive their rightful benefits and salaries in accordance with Liberian labor laws and other statutory laws. In conclusion, he emphasized the importance of serving the country with integrity and dedication, and encouraged everyone to work towards building a better Liberia.
