A female employee of the Division of Passports and Visas Extension at the Foreign Ministry in Monrovia, Liberia, found herself in the midst of controversy when she was accused of assaulting an army officer. However, the employee, Madam Charlotte Mason, has come forward to clarify the situation and explain that her actions were not intentional.
The incident took place on March 6, 2024, when Sergeant Noah Donzo, an officer of the Armed Forces of Liberia, visited the Division of Passports to inquire about an application he had made for a passport. A disagreement arose between Sergeant Donzo and Miss Mason, leading to what was perceived as an assault. Initially, Madam Mason denied the allegations of assault but has now spoken out to provide her side of the story.
In an interview with the NEW DAWN Newspaper, Madam Mason explained that the situation escalated due to the verbal exchanges between her and Sergeant Donzo. She clarified that she did not assault him but was merely trying to caution him as he became agitated and used profane language in the office. Madam Mason emphasized that she is not the type of person to act aggressively towards others and that her intention was to calm Sergeant Donzo down rather than harm him.
Madam Mason admitted to touching Sergeant Donzo in an attempt to guide him away from her desk so she could continue her work. She clarified that her actions were not meant to cause harm or be interpreted as an assault. When Sergeant Donzo expressed offense at her touch, she immediately apologized and tried to defuse the situation.
It was revealed that the situation had been exacerbated by the presence of Christopher Hayes Onanuga, the CEO of Kool FM 91.9, who was also at the Passport office. Mr. Onanuga allegedly initiated conflicts with the Division Passport and Visas staff, leading to further tensions in the office. Reports in the media portrayed Madam Mason in a negative light, which she believes was an attempt to support Mr. Onanuga’s version of events.
Sergeant Donzo and Mr. Onanuga both gave their accounts of the incident, with each highlighting their perspective on the events that transpired. Despite the differing narratives, Madam Mason has maintained that her actions were not intended to harm or assault Sergeant Donzo and that she only acted in self-defense in response to the escalating situation.
As the controversy continues to unfold, it is clear that there are conflicting accounts of what occurred at the Division of Passports and Visas Extension. Madam Mason’s clarification provides insight into her side of the story and sheds light on the complexities of the situation that led to the accusations against her. It remains to be seen how this incident will be resolved and what impact it will have on all parties involved.
